This 82 years old apartment building has seen it all.
It was built in 1930 as a residence for the workers involved in the construction of the Swiss railway. The apartment layouts were minimal, just enough comfort to survive the cold winters.
In 1999, the arrival of the Academy of Architecture in Mendrisio brought new life to the building, which became the perfect residence for university students, attracted by its low rental cost.
The Casa Gialla, or “the Old Lady” as it was known by the students for, become the gathering space for endless nights spent studying or partying.
The design for its renovation began from the name it was known for.
The beauty of an older lady is being not afraid of showing the passing of time on her skin and letting her soul shine a new youth.
Similarly, the design aims to preserve the exterior and the signs of time, while ensuring the highest energy standards in the interior.
The simple and minimal design offers countless layout variations. While the kitchen, built in “student-proof” materials, meets all the needs, from a 2 people date to an 18 people dinner party.
The calm palette obtained from the use of natural materials invites the students to express their creativity hanging painting, photographies, and colorful design pieces.
